Apply to Controller (CFO Track)
Controller (CFO Track)
Commercial Concrete Construction | $60M Revenue | Louisville, KY | Full Time, Onsite
Target Compensation: $250,000
Reports to: President
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Our client is a well established commercial concrete contractor in Louisville doing $60M in annual revenue, with a plan to reach $200M within 3 to 4 years. The finance function has served the business well but was built for a smaller company. The CFO seat is open. They need a Controller who can own the numbers today and build a finance and accounting department that can support $200M. Delivering that platform is the path to CFO.
This is not a maintenance role. You will inherit a lean, relationship driven accounting team and turn it into a scalable finance organization with the processes, systems, and people to support more than three times the current revenue.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Core Accounting and Reporting
• Own the full monthly close, general ledger, and financial statements, and cut close time to 10 business days or less
• Run percentage of completion revenue recognition (ASC 606, cost to cost) and produce an accurate monthly WIP schedule
• Manage over and under billings, retainage, change orders, and job fade and gain analysis
• Oversee AIA pay applications (G702/G703), lien waivers, and billing compliance
• Oversee payroll, including certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting where applicable
• Manage the annual audit or review and get the company audit ready
• Handle sales and use tax, 1099s, and coordinate with the outside CPA on tax planning
Finance and Capital
• Build and own the annual budget, rolling forecast, and 13 week cash flow
• Manage banking relationships, line of credit, and covenant compliance
• Own the surety relationship and deliver the WIP and financial packages that drive bonding capacity
• Deliver job level and division level profitability reporting to ownership and project managers
• Lead equipment fleet accounting, including capex planning, lease vs. buy analysis, and equipment cost allocation to jobs
Build and Scale
• Assess people, process, and technology and deliver a 90 day and 12 month roadmap
• Rationalize the current stack (ComputerEase, QuickBooks, Procore): eliminate duplicate entry, tighten the Procore to accounting integration, and lead the move to a scalable construction ERP when the business outgrows it
• Document and standardize processes and controls: AP, AR, job setup, cost coding, purchasing, and approvals
• Build job costing discipline between field, project management, and accounting so margins are visible in real time, not at job close
• Hire, develop, and restructure the team, including AP/AR, payroll, project accountants, and a future Assistant Controller
• Serve as a strategic partner to the President and ownership on pricing, backlog, growth, and capital planning
WHAT YOU BRING
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with 5+ years at the Controller level or equivalent
• Required: construction accounting experience; commercial or self perform subcontractor background strongly preferred
• Deep command of WIP, POC revenue recognition, job costing, and surety reporting
• ComputerEase, QuickBooks, and Procore experience strongly preferred; ERP migration experience a major plus
• Proven track record of transforming an informal or founder built finance function into a scalable one
• Experience managing audits, bank relationships, and bonding programs
• A builder's mindset: equally comfortable reconciling accounts and redesigning the department
• Credibility with owners, project managers, and field leadership
WHY THIS ROLE
• Defined path to CFO: build the finance platform that supports $200M and the title comes with it
• CFO level compensation from day one
• Direct partnership with the President and a real seat at the table
• A rare chance to build a construction finance function during a period of rapid growth
